Multi-role CBRN protection system makes DSEi debut

New tactical concept offers operational flexibility in hot zones

Military firefighters and CBRN units will gain greater operational flexibility from the latest purpose designed multi-role CBRN protection system to market. The revolutionary ST53 multi-role RPE system developed by Avon Rubber p.l.c.’s protection business, Avon Protection Systems, constitutes a new tactical concept. It is making its DSEi debut on the Avon Rubber p.l.c. stand (1833) from 11-14 September 2007, London, UK.

The ST53 multi-role RPE system has been developed by Avon Protection Systems to fulfill the emerging demand for tactical self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) to meet a broad range of extreme threats. It combines Avon Protection Systems’ FM53 mask with the latest SCBA technology derived from its CE compliant Atlantair range, which provides a high level of protection and independence from the atmosphere. This means that an operator can enter a hot zone using SCBA (positive pressure) and switch to filter mode (negative pressure) for extended protection once the atmosphere is less lethal.   Transition is simple, efficient and does not compromise protection during transition between modes.

The tactical SCBA capability delivered by the ST53 is required by special forces and specialist CBRN units, as well as a number of other specialist users in the police and emergency services.   Explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) units also have a need for this capability and the ST53 meets their requirements as it is low profile and can be worn underneath blast suits.

“The ST53 is a significant advance in CBRN protection and meets a new tactical need.  It is representative of the broader capability Avon Protection Systems is offering to the military to increase their operational flexibility,” said Jim Naylor, Sales & Marketing Manager, Avon Protection Systems.
